Title: “Monoamines in flies: fitness of individuals and species”
Abstract:
Monoamines affect numerous physiological and behavioral processes including impulse control, motivation, learning, memory, motor control and reproduction that are critical for fitness of individuals and species. Our research focuses on two major monoamines, dopamine and octopamine (an invertebrate counterpart of mammalian norepinephrine) in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Our goals are 1) to uncover the neural mechanisms by which dopamine and octopamine mediate various types of behavioral plasticity, and 2) to elucidate the physiological and cellular mechanisms that octopamine regulates oviposition. Knowledge obtained in this study is likely to help develop new strategies for insect control. I will discuss recent progress in our research toward achieving the goals.
